This research takes place within the Mémoire project, whi... more abstractThis article addresses the task of mining cases from biomedical literature to automatically build an initial case base for a case-based reasoning (CBR) system. This research takes place within the Mémoire project, which has for goal to provide a framework to facilitate building CBR systems in biology and medicine. By analyzing medical literature, the ProCaseMiner system mines for medical concepts such as diseases, signs and symptoms, laboratory tests, and treatment plans all connected together in a given medical domain. It then organizes these concepts in a structure called a case. This case mining component provides a definite help to start-up the creation of a biomedical CBR system case base, composed of both concrete cases and prototypical cases. This article validates the approach by presenting a comparison between the prototypical cases learnt from stem-cell transplantation do- main with those created by a team of experts in the domain.

This research takes place within the Telemakus project, which has for goal to support and facilitate the knowledge discovery process by providing retrieval, visual, and interaction tools to mine and map research findings from research literature in the field of aging. A concept mining component automating research findings extraction such as the one presented here, would permit Telemakus to be efficiently applied to other domains. The main principle that has been followed in this project has been to mine from the legends of the documents the research findings as relationships between concepts from the medical literature. The concept mining proceeds through stages of syntactic analysis, semantic analysis, relationships building, and ranking.

Based on the fact that semantics account for the success of biomedical case based reasoning syste... more abstractMémoire is a framework for the sharing and distribution of case bases and case based reasoning in biology and medicine. Based on the fact that semantics account for the success of biomedical case based reasoning systems, this paper defends the suitability of a semantic approach similar to the semantic Web for sharing and distributing case bases and case based reasoning in biology and medicine. Mémoire will permit to bridge the gap between the multiple case based reasoning systems dedicated to a single domain, and make available to agents and Web services on the Web the case based competency of the CBR systems adopting its interchange language. This paper presents the components of Mémoire for the representation of cases, case structure, and case based ontologies in biology and medicine. The approach could be extended to other application domains of CBR.
